Choosing a Race
When you decide you’re ready to do an “official” run or walk, first think about where you would like to do an event. Is travel something you want, or do you want it to be convenient and close to home. Look on-line for local races; active.com, runner’sworld.com, rockymountainsports.com are all websites that have event calendars, and there’s probably a zillion other websites out there with listings as well. Think about the course; is it flat, scenic, paved roads or trails, and don’t hesitate to contact the race coordinator to ask about the course. Find out if the race benefits any organization? Benefit races have become wonderfully popular, what a great way to be active in your community and help a local charity. Decide if you want to be a part of a big production or a small one. Big races usually have more spectator support, which is always helpful and encouraging, but if there are lots of runners/walkers, you can be slowed down at the start because of crowding. Smaller races often have a nice intimate feel, more personal touches, but may not have the huge spectator support along the course. Finally, don’t be timid about signing-up for an event. You’ve worked hard and it’s time for the pay-off of crossing an official finish line, not just walking back into your house! Plus, most of the time, you get a t-shirt out of the deal. So what are you waiting for? Here’s a great family oriented event in October worth checking out; Compass Montessori harvest Festival Race Keep fit, keep healthy.
